What kind of therapy models do you use?
Are you my old Professor? What a great question! I primarily use a model called Experiential Therapy, the basic idea of which is that you have a limited range of motion in your life based on a very small territory of experience. If together we can stretch and expand your territory by experiencing events or emotions in new ways, we can change what you are willing to expect from yourself. If you have a specific therapy in mind give me a call and we can talk about it. If I am not qualified to help you in the way you want, I will do my best to help you find what you’re looking for. (I know a lot of therapists.)
Why don’t you take insurance?
Like my PapPap used to say, “Insurance is just a racket!!” I don’t agree with PapPap entirely, insurance is a vital part of our system and helps pay for the dramatically rising costs of healthcare in the US.
There are a couple of reasons I have chosen to not accept insurance.
I don’t believe that you need a diagnosis that is going to follow you around for the rest of your life. Insurance needs this service to be justified. I think you looking at my FAQs page is justification enough that you deserve company on this part of your journey. When you’re ready: we start. When you’re finished: we stop. No one outside of the two of us deserves the power to say otherwise.
My fees are reasonable and fixed. My schedule is flexible and accommodating. Taking insurance usually means the opposite will be true. I won’t allow that.
This does not mean that you can’t use your insurance benefits. I can provide you with a superbill that you can send to your insurance for reimbursement, and sometimes clients are able to use their flex spending account to pay for services.
Do I really need therapy?
Man that is a question I get a lot. And I have never been able to answer it directly with a yes or no, because really, it depends. Do you feel a pull in your heart to be seen and heard? Do you feel like you need help sorting through the mess you’re in? Do you feel overwhelmed by the pain, grief, or fear that you’re carrying? The bottom line is, if you feel enough of a pull to be here now, I think one session couldn’t hurt. I’m more than happy to see you once and hear that this path is not for you. I think you deserve to see that for yourself too.
How long will all of this take?
It depends on three things: the severity of what you’re going through, your willingness to put in the work outside of session, and the number of outside influences that are contributing to your issue. I have had some people come in a couple times and find the tools they need to continue their journey. I have seen some people for a over a year as we worked through massive difficulties. I saw one person for 18 minutes and she said I changed her life. Statistically speaking, the national average is 8-10 sessions.
Do you prescribe medication?
BUT, I do enjoy working closely with doctors in the area to ensure that whatever medications they are prescribing for your mental health are working with whatever types of therapy we are engaging in together. I believe in communicating with the care team you already have in place.
How often do I have to come?
How frequently would you like to? Most people choose to come once a week, but I have many clients who find once or twice a month gives them enough stuff to think about and work on. I work within your needs.
What kinds of problems do you work with?
Oh, lots of different kinds of things. Look Here
Do you do sessions over the internet?
I know, sometimes problems seem big and you get scared of leaving your house. It would be so much easier if you didn’t have to do that awkward thing of meeting me in my super nice office and getting free candy. You would think I would be all on board with internet therapy, cheaper for me, easier for you, and I don’t have to wear deodorant. Here’s the reason why as of right now I have not been convinced of doing what is being called telepsych mental health care. Nothing, nothing can take the place of the energetic exchange that happens between two people sharing the same physical space. There are elements of communication that cannot translate through the cloud. In a room with me there are no distractions, no pop ups, no interruptions, no glitches and no slow service. You have my attention completely focused on you. That simply doesn’t come through on telepsych. ALL THAT BEING SAID, I’m not some old fogey who won’t get with the times. I’m down to negotiate. Send me an email and explain to me why you need telepsych. I might just agree with you.
I look forward to the next step.
